ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Head Of Department -

                                     Aims   and   Objectives

The faculty aims at, firstly, extending a child’s emotional range through the means of imaginative entertainment; secondly, suggesting certain human values; and thirdly encouraging the habit of reading, listening, and thinking critically and analytically – a habit which will benefit him beyond the English classes. These aims are part of English. To restrict the subject to language and communication is only rather a betrayal. There is a twin growth going on. We believe in motivating the students to inquire themselves into the material given, and into much else besides. Questioning and curiosity are considered the most valuable qualities along with hard work.

It included interesting topics like, “nobody is perfect, I am nobody” and “looks can get you anywhere” and many more. For some, it was a novel experience and brought out the oratorical skills of many speakers. The first prize was bagged by DPS, R.K. Puram.

5) The Annual English Play---The school provides many opportunities to the staff and    students to bring forth their creative talents. The annual English play presented by the English faculty is one such event that every one looks forward to. This year’s play ‘Oliver Twist’ was staged in the auditorium on March 29-30. The shows for the students were held from March 28 to March 2. The play was based on the story ‘Oliver Twist’ written by Charles Dickens. Ms. Amarjeet Chhabra directed the play.

The entire event was a very well coordinated by the students. They not only managed the back stage duties like property movement but also smoothly carried out other duties like providing light and sound, set designing, choreography and auditorium decoration.

The play proved to be a great hit with the students as well as the parents. The students captured the hearts of the audience with their spectacular performance and professional- ism. The acting skills of the lead actors - Jasraj Singh (XII G) and Sarthak Vig (VII-D) were highly praised.

The audience was full of praise for Varsha Das Gupta (XII E) who choreographed the dances of the play. The whole troupe was congratulated for their hard work and team spirit. Our chief guests for one of the shows were eminent personalities from the National School of Drama. They encouraged the actors and applauded them for their wonderful performance.

Today, English dominates in every sphere of life, be it education, TV or print, electronic media or internet, the domain of English is felt everywhere. There is hardly any sphere of social life where English does not make its presence felt.It is estimated that by 2010 about billion people of the world would be adroit both in speaking and writing English.

Journalism, tourism, management, linguistics, library, teaching and information science… Literature students can pick their choice for their higher study.

There are several higher study options in English language and literature, such as journalism and mass communication; management; tourism administration; law; international relations; linguistics; communication management; film editing and direction; visual communication; and library and information science. One can choose any of the courses that suit one’s aptitude and interest.

Universities offer Master of Journalism (MJ); Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ); MA communication; Master of Communication Studies (MCS); Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC); and Master of Mass Communication (MMC) courses.

Admission is based on the score in the Common Admission Test of the IIMs, group discussion and personal interview.

If interested, one can choose the M.A. cinema and television course and can also get trained in medical transcription or technical writing and be a medical transcriptionist or technical writer.

Linguistics :

Linguistics is the scientific study of languages. It deals with the structure and development of a language and its relationship to other languages. Almost all central and other leading universities in India offer master’s, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in linguistics. Those having a degree in any discipline with at least 45-50 per cent marks may apply for the master’s course.

After obtaining higher qualifications in linguistics students can become linguists and are eligible to work as audiologists; newsreaders; interpreters; psycholinguists; lexicographers; content and copy writers; editors; tour operators; and so on. Teaching is another career option. A postgraduate in linguistics with technical expertise can get good jobs in software companies.
